For those of you who are a very observant, you may have noticed that all of the blogs posted to date have had the name of a song as the title. If you hadn’t realized that… well now you know why the blogs titles seemed a little strange. This is your oooooooooh-aaaaaaah moment. But for this blog I decided to go a little more straightforward.

Now some of you might know what DIY means & some of you may not. DIY stands for Do It Yourself. This is something that applies to pretty much any facet of your life or work you want to do. It applies to us in that we handle pretty much every part of our band & promotion. We book our own shows, we design our own merch/flyers/websites & album artwork, we produce our own music & found our own distribution, we build our own stage props, we hit the streets to promote our band ourselves, etc. etc. We do this for 2 reasons. First, because we want to have creative control over everything that we do & not get screwed over by anyone. Second, because we’re not signed & don’t have the funds to have anyone to do everything for us. But even then, we have had offers to sign with indie labels. Unfortunately we noticed that the “deals” we were getting pretty much still had us doing everything, so we’ve just stuck to handling it ourselves. This means delaying things like recording new music, new merch & videos. But when you have the DIY ethic, you MAKE IT WORK. We’re definitely not the first or the last band to handle all aspects for themselves, but we’re just posting this blog to give you a little insight as to how things go down behind the scenes.

The focus of this specific post is the music video for our song “Hush Hush”, off of our 2008 release “Escuchame.” One of the most important things you need for promotion when you release an album is a music video. Even though there isn’t many music channels left playing actual videos, they are still extremely relevant & can help boost the sales of your album. Now when we decided to shoot our video we had a ton of ideas for it. But with a DIY budget of about $100 (LITERALLY) we had to figure out the best way to streeeeeeetch our dollars. We came up with a concept, begged our 2 friends Victor DeAnda & Bryce Duncan who had some camera equipment to help us shoot it, bought our “supplies” & rigged up a set in our rehearsal studio. If it wasn’t for us building & setting up our props, having a great post-production artist (that happens to be in our band) & having awesome friends that were super helpful, the result wouldn’t have come close to what we actually got. Anyone can string a few clips together for a music video & throw it up on YouTube, but to have something that you can have played on an actual music channel is difficult. Luckily for us, we achieved that!

We’re back with the second interview post in our “getting to know you” FATIMA series. We’re still not quite at Vh1 Behind the Music status, so we’ll keep updating you guys on how psychotic & destructive we actually are, ourselves. The first interview brought you inside the mind of our bassist & founding member Rodolfo Reyes, Licenciado. Now it’s time to get lost in the vast wasteland that is my mind. It wouldn’t be very fair to interview myself, so I sat down with Cesar & had him grill me as if he was Larry King. He even wore the suspenders, tacky dress shirt & some shoulder pads to make his shoulders look all kinds of wonky. Now THAT is dedication.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. And the answer is… Yes… you ARE going to go down some deep dark psychological hallways, wind around some dangerous curves of knowledge, learn some things about the kama sutra & go on an all around mind bender. Ok, enough with the nonsense. Here is the conversation Cesar and I had after a few drinks and watching some episodes of Dexter & Sons of Anarchy. Enjoy.

What instrument(s) do you play?

Guitar & Keytar.

How/when did you first start playing music?

I first got interested in actually playing music in middle school, Stevenson Jr High represent!

I was really into metal at the time & my death metalhead buddy taught me how to play few power chords on some beat up BC Rich warlock he had.  In the 8th grade we found out about a battle of the bands our school was having & we decided we HAD to perform. We were completely disorganized so we asked some older, cooler friends of ours who were in high school to help us out. They showed us how to play a few Sepultura songs & we ended up performing the song (War For) Territory. It was great because there were only about 8 of us in school really into that style of music, but I had so many awesome friends who really dug the fact that we were a “band” that everyone was cheering us on. After that I was determined to really learn how to play. I would sit in my room for hours playing my $99 no name guitar thru my shitty little peavy keyboard amp. So our neighbors in my cul-de-sac in east los got to learn a lot about Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Pantera & especially Metallica, because I would play they’re songs over and over. Apologies to the residents of Dacotah & Atlantic St. circa 1992.

What kind of gear do you currently use?

I’m in the process of changing out some stuff, but right now I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio, Epiphone Les Paul Custom, Marshall JCM 2000 DSL & 4×12 cab, a few Boss pedals (metal zone, TU-2 tuner, digital reverb & delay RV3, G-7 equalizer, CH-1 super chorus, OS-2 overdrive), Shure PGX14 Wireless, Monster Cables, Red Monkey Designs custom Fatima guitar straps, Snarling Dog .73mm picks & D’Addario XL Nickel 10g Strings. Most of that stuff is used for studio & recording though. Live I’m just running with the gain high on the amp. I love the sound that comes out of a JCM.

How/when did you join Fatima?

I joined Fatima just after the old Ojos Cerrados EP was recorded/released. I think that was in ’04. We’ve been friends since high school & we all used to skateboard & party together. I was hanging around the studio while you guys were recording, mainly because there was a pool table there.

The one that was tilted to one side because the leg was broken?

That’s the one! So I guess I might have been added to the lineup by default because the guy who was playing the 2nd guitar wasn’t into it at the time, and after the record was done he was out. Right place right time.

What was the first show you played with/as Fatima?

The first show I ever played with Fatima was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Beverly Hills in like 2004/2005. I don’t think that venue is even there anymore. But after that night I knew we had a special chemistry & that things were going to go well for us.  We looked sexy as all hell up there. I’m surprised bras & panties weren’t being thrown up on stage.

Out of all the shows you have played, do you have a favorite or one that sticks out among all others?

There is really no way of picking one over another. We’ve had the extreme luck, pleasure, whatever you want to call it, to play amazing shows in front anywhere from 5 to 2000 people. But I would say the show(s) that come to mind right away are all the old Westchester shows. As much as some people “hated” on that venue back in the day, it was the perfect dive. Free parking, cheap drinks & awesome management (Al the Godfather). We always had great shows there. It’s where we honed our live skills & learned how to put on a great show. The last few shows there were insane. To have locals, LA locals who are notorious for standing arms crossed & looking bored at shows, singing along & starting big mosh pits to our music was rad.  I miss that place. RIP to the eight ball.

What is the funniest tour story you can remember (and can discuss without getting in trouble)?

There are so many to choose from. Getting banned from a very well-known sunset strip venue. Over the top games of king’s cup. The band jumping off stage mid set to beat the shit out of some guys punking smaller kids in Vegas. The tour games we create to torture our manager. (el premio mayor) Tons and tons of male nudity.

C’mon you can only pick one remember!

Ok, ok.  The year we got to play SxSw in Austin is a good one. We got invited to play a showcase at SxSw and were stoked to say the very fucking least. Only problem is that we, as most indie bands do, all have day jobs. So although we would have loved to be there all week partying and taking in the music, we had to go there and back as quickly as possible. We couldn’t fly because the cargo fees for our equipment would have killed us, so we piled into my old Nissan Frontier & hooked a u-haul trailer up to it. The plan was to drive non-stop in teams of 2, so that we could actually get some sleep. Team RamRod (Cesar and I) took the first shift & team smokes-a-lot (Rudy & Gina/Doula) were our back up.  We drove 26hrs straight… Got to San Antonio where we were crashing for the night at 4am the day we are supposed to perform & were so beyond sleep that we said fuck it & opened up a bottle of Jack Daniels… Drank until we performed that afternoon… Hit 3 different bars/showcases after our own show & partied with friends from LA & Mexico who where there for the Warped Tour showcase… Slept a couple hours, then drove 26hrs straight back. It was all sorts of fantastic & awful at the same time. There were so many things that went on in a 3 day period. I think I might have to do a podcast to run it all down.

That was such a ridiculous trip! 

It was!  But I would do it again in a heartbeat. You get so many stories from being on tour that you can tell when you’re an old man. That way the younger kids will think, hey this old man is the shit.

What musicians/bands/artists have influenced you the most musically altogether?

Too many! I guess to narrow it down tops on the list would be Minor Threat & Gorilla Biscuits, Pantera, Nofx, Rise Against & Bayside. I get inspiration from and listen to all types of bands from all types of genres, but I would say that these bands have influenced the way I structure a song most of all.

What band(s) are you currently listening to?

I have a 60gb iPod that has everything from Cannibal Corpse to Justin Timberlake, but there are a couple of records that I’ve had on repeat lately. Bayside – Killing Time, Alkaline Trio – Agony & Irony, the Darlings – The New Escape, Emery – We Do What We Want, Only Crime – To the Nines, Four Year Strong – Enemy of the World.

What was the last show/concert you went to?

The last show I went to was Mayer Hawthorne & the County’s record release show at the Roxy.

You’ve been telling me to check out his music for a while. 

Dude, it’s really good.  Motown feel to it. They put on a great live show too. If you can win me over live, i’m a fan for life. Hence, the next show we’re going to is Bayside, for what seems like the 100th time.  I have to catch them every time they roll thru LA. I sing my heart out fangirl style too. Anthony Raneri is definitely on my mancrush list. But on the real, he’s such a cool down to earth guy.

Aside from playing music, what other activities/hobbies do you like to do?

I’m really getting into crochet. Cross stitching as well. It really brings me to a peaceful place.

Really, I still try to skateboard whenever I can. Me & Rudy took up golfing a while back too. I figure if Fat Mike can do it, so can I. Eating… A lot of eating. Eating is considered a hobby right?

If it is, we might be considered professionals, not hobbyists. 

You definitely have a point there. Aside from that I’ve been taking a lot of photos lately. Thinking about getting a better camera & actually putting in some work to become a good photog.

What do you want people to know about the new music Fatima is writing?

Balls.

(laughs) Just Balls?

Of course not. What I want people to know is that they better start strengthening their neck muscles now, because there is going to be some serious head bobbing going down once the record actually comes out. I think we have a good balance of faster/heavier songs that the young’uns can cause a ruckus too & slowed down, sing along type of songs. This is definitely not one of those “experimental” 2nd albums that bands seem to like putting out to show how much they’ve “changed.” We’re not changing our formula, but I think you’ll be able to notice the… I guess maturity would be the right word, from the first record to this one.

Without music I would be : bored. extremely bored.

Hola! Hope everyone is having a great start to the week. I know we are! We’re super excited about all of our upcoming prospects, projects & plans for the rest of 2011 & into 2012. It’s going to be full steam ahead for the FATIMA train once we get going. I had the pleasurable opportunity to be a guest on a friend’s hilarious podcast, The Nothing But Show, to talk about music and hype the band a little.  The episode I was on also had Los Angeles radio station, KROQ radio, on air personalities Lisa May (from the Kevin & Bean Show) & Mike ‘psycho Mike’ Catherwood (from Loveline & also dancing with the stars).  The episode also featured an interview with funnyman Brad Williams, who is one of the best stand up acts out there right now.  So, to say the very least, I felt very lucky that the NBS crew had me on to talk about our little alternative spanish rock band along with these awesome guests. As a matter of fact it was so awesome that the episode ran long, and they had to cut it into 2 parts so that you wouldn’t have to roll thru a 3 hour podcast.

Happy Friday! Why so happy you say? Well first off you are healthy enough to be on here reading this, right? Secondly, I have about 3 pints of booze in me… so that’s as far as my explanations are gonna go tonight.

This is going to be the first in a series of “getting to know you” interview posts with each Fatima member.  Even if you’re familiar with our music… Even if you’ve seen us live… Even if you’ve partied with us… Even if you know us personally… Even if you if you know a member in the “biblical” sense… this will give you a little more insight as to how each band member ticks. Everyone loves to get behind the scenes on, well, pretty much anything you goddam gossips! We’re pretty far off from a Vh1 behind the music special, so this will have to do for now. Like I said this will be the first in a series, so if you guys have any questions that you would like answered in future posts please email us.

Now for your reading pleasure, here are some questions answered by a true gentleman, charlatan, cannabis connoisseur & founding member of the band… the illustrious Rudy aka El Rudo aka Agent Robin aka BombFu

What instrument(s) do you play?

Bass, Keyboards, Piano & Drums (when Victor let’s me at rehearsal)

How/when did you first start playing music?

I’ve always had a passion for music, but before I played all I did was skateboard. I never really thought of playing bass, let alone playing in a band. Cesar, who I have known since high school, brought up the idea of starting a band. I told him I had no experience with music, but he said that was fine and that he’d teach me. I said yes and we went to the store & bought a $14.95 teach me how to play bass book with cd. (laughs) He gave me an old bass that he would use when he played in local bands and I started practicing. I haven’t stopped since.

What kind of gear do you currently use?

I use a Fender/Squier P-Bass, Gallien Krueger head with 4×10 & 1×15 cabs, Korg DTR1 Rack Tuner, Shure PGX14 Wireless & Rotosound Strings.

How/when did you join Fatima?

Like I mentioned before, I’ve been in Fatima since the beginning. I couldn’t really tell you when it started, it’s been way to long. (laughs)

What was the first show you played with/as Fatima?

Wow, that was a long time ago. First show ever was at a place called Salon Corona. I don’t remember somewhere in LA county for sure. (laughs)

It was in North Hollywood.

That’s right!

Out of all the shows you have played, do you have a favorite or one that sticks out among all others?

It’s really hard to pick just one, but it would have to be our Hard Rock Cafe show in Guadalajara, Mexico. We had just barely made it there on time, after a 6-7 hour bus ride from Mexico City. We got off the bus, grabbed all of our gear, split in to a couple of cabs & drove about 80mph to the venue, only to get to there & find out we play in 15 minutes (laughs). We hauled all of our gear into the venue, which was in a mall, along with our luggage & bags and on our shoulders since we didn’t have time to go to the hotel. Everyone is tired, hasn’t showered & is feeling like crap right? But as soon as we hit the stage I felt like we just exploded. I couldn’t tell you where all that energy came from, but it was there. That was an awesome feeling. To do a show like that again would be awesome, but yes, just without the long bus ride (laughs).

What is the funniest tour story you can remember (and can discuss without getting in trouble)?

(laughing) Theres just so many. I don’t know where to begin, but here we go. There is one story that comes to mind right away. It’s when one of our drunk homies (who will remain unnamed) was in the tour van with us & decided it’d be funny to take his underwear off & toss it around the van. This was without taking off his pants by the way. (laughs) He just ripped them off completely and started throwing them at everyone in the car. I even think he put them on someone’s face…. oh yeah MY FACE THAT FUCKER!!

That’s right. We even had to pull over because I started throwing up! 

That shit was hilarious.

What musicians/bands/artists have influenced you the most musically altogether?

Dude there’s so many. Off the top of my head I would have to say At The Drive In, Sparta, Emery, Bayside. But really all types of music. Genre’s from Los caminantes to Sade. I just love music!

What band(s) are you currently listening to?

Right now I am listening to the new Emery and Silverstein albums. Also a lot of oldies. Not gansta oldies, but like malt shop 50′s oldies. You know the good ones.

So no memories of El Monte or Art Laboe Oldies?

I’m down with those too. I am from east los. (laughs)

What was the last show/concert you went to?

The last show i went to was probably Bayside at the Henry Fonda theater.

Oh, you mean the one where you got hammered and spilled beer all over yourself? 

(laughing) No comment.

Right now, I’ve been playing a lot of golf. I just started playing in a softball league on Fridays too.

What do you want people to know about the new music Fatima is writing?

What can I really say. hmm. Well you will really hear the change in it, like the the maturity. But you will also feel the swift kick to the face when you hear the energy in the songs and emotion that is put into it.

Well hello there. I would like for you all to read this post in an english accent, since I am watching the Guy Ritchie movie “Snatch” while I write it. Fancy that?

As previously promised here are some pics from our 2009 promo tour in Mexico. We had the pleasure of having our CD released in Mexico, complete with new artwork and an extra track. I finally understand why the “import” CD’s always cost so much more than the US releases. On this tour we got to do a ton interviews over the span of 6 days in Mexico City. I don’t remember the exact number, but it was around 53. We sprinkled in a couple live shows, plenty of boozing & spent our off time taking a food tour of some great local spots in Mexico City. There are way too many pictures to have you scroll thru, so I am going to make a happy little slide show. Enjoy, and drool, over one of the best & most eventful weeks we ever had as a band!

Hello…. my name is Ever…. and i’m a procrastinatorholic. Well, I say this seeing as how my last blog post was started in 2009 and actually posted last week. BUT, that is also a sign of how busy we got for the rest of 2009 & 2010. Over the last 2 years we got the opportunity to tour/hang/eat/drink/party/getnaked with so many bands, as well as with fans, that we are now close friends with. When we first decided to venture out of playing house parties & back yards in east LA, setting out on DIY tours & putting out an independent record, we couldn’t have imagined all the love we would get. Now that we’ve roamed the southwestern US & all over mexico multiple times, I feel like we’ve surpassed any of the goals we originally had. But that doesn’t mean that we are done in any way! We’re in pre-production for our new record, setting up new shows & re-stocking merch to get the FATIMA name back on everyones lips.

Now… due to my terrible memory (and in now way due to copious amounts of Jack Daniels) there is no way I can go back & give you detailed account of everything that went on during our Mexico CD release promo tour, tours with Finde & Kill Aniston, among other debauchery on the road. But that is the great thing about having random people with cameras around. Here is a visual account of a few days in the last couple years in the life of FATIMA. These are all from US shows. I’ll post the Mexico tour stuff in a separate post. Unfortunately you’ll have to wait for the new CD & hidden “extras” for the NSFW pics. Enjoy.

What’s up people. So today is the first day on the tour. We kick off the first date up in Salinas at the illustrious Fox Theater. We met up at a secret location near dodger stadium and awaited the caravan. We invited the boys from Misterequis and Kill Aniston along for the first four dates on the tour, so we knew we were in for 2 things. 1 – really good performances & 2 – late night partying. We hopped in the tour van and jumped on the 5 heading toward the central valley. Of course once we were actually on the freeway the pranks began.

We arrived at the venue a few hours before doors for the sound check. The Fox Theater is a huge venue with awesome sound. Got in, ran our sound and made way for Misterequis to run theirs.  We always try our best to have everyone have a soundcheck. We’ve been the opening band so many times, so we try and treat everyone the way we would like to be treated.

After sound, we headed back to the hotel to check in. Berto mooned the equis guys, we changed into our Freddy Mercury jumpsuits and headed back to the venue.

Now driving up to the Fox was great. Seeing our name up on the marquee and people in line was so awesome.

Welcome everyone! This is the first official post on our new tour diary. Kind of funny that it falls exactly 6 months since I started blogging about our road shenanigans on my myspace page. I posted up my past blogs, as well as Gina aka Doula Music’s 2008 mexico tour blog so you can reminisce along with us. The idea of this page is to keep you updated on all the craziness that happens on the road. Tour van hilarity, backstage antics and all around behind the scenes action in the world of FATIMA. For your dia de los muertos needs

We arrived in SB pretty early, so after briefly checking out the venue and dropping off some equipment we took a stroll down State St for some eats.  Now i’ve had this love affair with a burger joint called The Habit Burger Grill for a while, and seeing as how it originated in SB I thought there would be nothing better than a charburger & a shake for lunch. I talked it up and convinced everyone to eat there. Six full bellies later we headed back to the venue.

The venue was a place called the Stateside Lounge, just off of State St. The lineup consisted of us (www.myspace.com/fatima) along with I was a Lover Delorean was a Dealer (www.myspace.com/iwasaloverband) & Las Vegas’ own Menores (www.myspace.com/menores). They both put on good performances & then it was time for the big guns. hahahaha. Now we had a fuckin’ great soundcheck so we were hyped & ready to go.  But as I plugged in the problems began. Pedalboard out. Amp head out. After 20 minutes of frustration we finally ran with what we could get going.

It ended up being a great show. Anytime you can hear the crowd singing along over the music & a pit forms, you know you did your job. We made a bunch of new friends and had an awesome time for our first show in SB.
